Summary:

Two projects that best show my understanding of Outcome 2 are my "Rock'n Rhythm Hero" and "Musical Time Periods" projects.

In the project “Rock’n Rhythm Hero”, I created an interactive Excel spreadsheet to teach and assess student knowledge of nine different note and rest types.  I had to create a lesson plan that evaluated student learning needs, and articulate the general and specific goals of the activity.  This allowed me to decide the necessity of technology when teaching my content, and helped me determine the most appropriate way to integrate that technology.  This activity also provided learners with immediate feedback on their knowledge of different note and rest types.  This allows them the opportunity to find their own mistakes and independently learn the content.

In the project “Musical Time Periods”, I created a PowerPoint presentation on the seven musical time periods.  Again, I was asked to evaluate learning needs and learning styles in order to make appropriate decisions to differentiate my instruction in a lesson plan format.  I stimulated visual learners through the use of images and on-screen text.  I delievered the presentation verbally, and played musical examples from each time period to accommodate auditory learners.  I also created hand motions for each time period for kinesthetic learners. Lastly, I created a handout for students to complete during the presentation to aid those with tactile learning needs.

I demonstrated Outcome 2 because I evaluated the most appropriate methods of teaching for my specific student population, chose appropriate technology based on student needs, and examined assessment strategies for each activity.

Reflection:

These projects enabled me to look at the most effective way to teach students musical content.  I needed to look at their specific learning needs and cater my instruction to them.  These projects also made me evaluate the use of technology in the classroom and how it impacts learning.  Technology in the classroom should be used purposely, not simply for the sake of using it.  I also learned the value of giving students immediate feedback when assessing them.
